Meinhard II of Tyrol
How Tyrol took Val di Non, castle by castle.
In the second half of the thirteenth century Count Meinhard II of Tyrol-Gorizia got his hands on Val di Non, and our entries keep three concrete traces of it. He bought the castle of Castelfondo and made it his bridgehead for gaining control of the valley. In 1283 he seized the county of the Flavon, and in the same year the impoverished monastery of Santa Maria Coronata spoke of wars and ill-treatment suffered. In 1271 he had founded a castle above Fondo of which only ruins remain, because the church of Santa Lucia was later built on top of those ruins.
