Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena
Born of a vow made on setting out for the crusade of 1241.
It belonged to the monastery of Santa Maria Coronata, the complex that today is called Castel La Santa. The monastery was in all likelihood born from the fulfilment of a vow made by the counts of Flavon, who were setting out for the crusade of 1241 against the Mongols who had invaded Hungary: a thread linking this hill in the Val di Non to a war on the borders of Europe.
It appears for the first time on 21 March 1244, in a bull of Pope Innocent IV that calls it novella plantatio, a new plantation. It followed the Augustinian rule, and the prior Gennaro was also chaplain to the prince-bishop of Trento.
In 1283 the convent was so impoverished that it was handed over to the Teutonic Order of Bolzano: the prior spoke of wars and of mistreatment suffered, and in that same year Mainardo II of Tirolo-Gorizia was seizing the county of the Flavon. Converted into a hospice, it remained in the hands of the Teutonic knights until 1695.
