Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena

The Baschenis painted all of it, and in 1617 an order was given to remove every image.

The presence of a place of worship at Cusiano is documented as early as 1368, and from 1470 it is known that Giovanni and Battista, of the important Baschenis workshop originally from the Valle Averara, worked on its decoration. The frescoes, carried out until almost the end of the century, covered the walls of the hall, the presbytery and the apse: not a single wall, the whole church. The solemn consecration came at the end of that renovation work, in 1497, performed by the suffragan bishop Francesco De la Chiesa.

The nave, and in particular its vault, was completed after the middle of the sixteenth century, and in that phase frescoes of the apostles and the crucifixion were added; in 1567 a renewed consecration followed, officiated by Bishop Biagio Aliprandini da Livo. At the end of the century, when the door of the new sacristy was opened, many frescoed works were irretrievably lost.

The worst blow came in 1617, with Bishop Belli's order to remove all the frescoes and paintings from the walls of the church. The bell tower was built around the middle of the eighteenth century and in 1820 had to be restored after a fire; in 1854 the interior was whitewashed and the vault of the presbytery was decorated with a silver star motif.

Today in the valleys

Just a moment...

Gipthe bearded vulture of Valli del Noce

Hi, I am Gip. I am a bearded vulture: my species had vanished from the Alps in the 1930s, and the first one born in Trentino in at least a hundred and fifty years took flight from Val di Rabbi this past 16 July.

Ask me about places, the valleys or the people who work here. I answer with what is in our pages: if I do not know something, I will tell you.

Gip is an assistant based on artificial intelligence. It answers only with the verified facts in our pages. Your questions are processed by Anthropic, in the United States, and we do not keep them: do not write personal data. How we handle them.
