The pieve of Mezzocorona is first mentioned in a document of 17 July 1199, when it was the mother church of the churches of Magrè, Grumo, Nave San Rocco, Zambana, Fai, Mezzolombardo, Roverè della Luna and Favogna. In the 14th century both the church and the bell tower were rebuilt, and between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th the building was enlarged and the tower raised; the reconsecration was celebrated on 26 April 1539 by the suffragan bishop Vincenzo Negusanti.

Restorations followed between 1592 and 1593 and again between 1650 and 1654, and between 1750 and 1757 the bell tower was raised once more, by Domenico Rizzolli of Magrè. At the beginning of the 19th century the church was judged inadequate and it was decided to rebuild it: the architect Giuseppe Segusini of Feltre was considered, but in the end the design by Leopoldo von Claricini was preferred.

On 3 September 1862 the demolition of the old pieve began, and on 19 October the foundation stone of the new one was laid. The works were almost finished when, on 28 May 1865, a pier that served to support the crossing tower collapsed; the destroyed part was rebuilt and the church was completed in a short time. The consecration was conferred on 3 November 1867 by the Bishop of Trento Benedetto Riccabona de Reichenfels.

Today in the valleys

Just a moment...

Gipthe bearded vulture of Valli del Noce

Hi, I am Gip. I am a bearded vulture: my species had vanished from the Alps in the 1930s, and the first one born in Trentino in at least a hundred and fifty years took flight from Val di Rabbi this past 16 July.

Ask me about places, the valleys or the people who work here. I answer with what is in our pages: if I do not know something, I will tell you.

Gip is an assistant based on artificial intelligence. It answers only with the verified facts in our pages. Your questions are processed by Anthropic, in the United States, and we do not keep them: do not write personal data. How we handle them.
