Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

Three fires in four and a half centuries, and each time it was put back on its feet.

Parish church of Smarano, one of the hamlets of the scattered municipality of Predaia. The pieve first appears in 1272, in the list of the pievi of the archpriesthood of Anaunia; the dedication to the Virgin is attested from 1309.

In 1407 a fire destroyed it. It was rebuilt in Gothic forms and consecrated by the auxiliary bishop Vitale, and one arch of that building survives, incorporated into the church seen today. The pastoral visit of 1579 counted four altars there: the high altar dedicated to the Assumption, the others to Saint John the Baptist, to Saint Anthony and to Saint Catherine, the latter renamed in 1616 to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary.

Shortly after the middle of the 18th century a second devastating fire led the parish priest Lorenzo Dal Ponte to have a larger one built, to a design by the architect Pietro Bianchi.

Today in the valleys

Just a moment...

Gipthe bearded vulture of Valli del Noce

Hi, I am Gip. I am a bearded vulture: my species had vanished from the Alps in the 1930s, and the first one born in Trentino in at least a hundred and fifty years took flight from Val di Rabbi this past 16 July.

Ask me about places, the valleys or the people who work here. I answer with what is in our pages: if I do not know something, I will tell you.

Gip is an assistant based on artificial intelligence. It answers only with the verified facts in our pages. Your questions are processed by Anthropic, in the United States, and we do not keep them: do not write personal data. How we handle them.
