The core is the great tower, probably from the 13th century, a checkpoint for the traffic on the road that ran below it into the Val di Non; it belonged to the lords of Metz, the Mezzocorona. In 1541 the prince-bishop Cristoforo Madruzzo raised it to a fief and invested Sigismondo Spaur with it, who began to rebuild it: two smaller towers, a more comfortable and spacious dwelling, a noble residence. The works continued after his death, in 1544. In the garden stands the church of Sant'Apollonia, also from the 16th century.
Giovanni Michele Spaur was born here in 1638, prince-bishop of Trento from 1695 to 1725. The Spaur held it until the first half of the 19th century, when it passed to the counts Welsperg; it was then sold to the Cassa di Risparmio di Trento e Rovereto, which in 1940 transferred it to Rinaldo Tamanini. Today it is privately owned and can be visited only during public events.
