Forte Strino
Austrian fort of 1860-1861 along the Tonale road, between Vermiglio and the pass, at 1,538 metres.
Built between 1860 and 1861, it was the first of the fortifications with which the Austrian Empire guarded the new Tonale border after the loss of Lombardy in 1859. It has a semicircular plan on two levels, with the gun positions facing the pass road and the Val Vermiglio, and the lower part served as a road barrier; in 1891 Forte Velon was added further down, linked to it by a covered staircase about 140 metres long. The damage it bears comes from the salvaging of iron and granite after the war, not from fighting. Restored by the Comune di Vermiglio with the Provincia, it houses an exhibition on the Guerra Bianca with finds gathered by the recuperanti of Vermiglio.
