The first chapel of Celentino is mentioned as early as 1301. Around the fifteenth century it was rebuilt from scratch and enlarged, and the new church, dedicated to the Madonna, was solemnly consecrated on 14 October 1500 by the suffragan bishop of Trento Francesco De la Chiesa. In 1580 it became a curacy of the pieve of Ossana, that is, of the church of San Vigilio, and obtained the baptismal font.
The pastoral visit of 1672 established that the place of worship had to be enlarged to hold the faithful, and the works were carried out by 1694, the year in which the consecration of the two altars of the hall is recorded. It was only in the early years of the eighteenth century that the dedication became the present one, to Sant'Agostino.
From 1830 work began on a new rebuilding, completed in 1872: the apse and the presbytery were rebuilt and the nave was lengthened. The bell tower dates from 1868, and the last parts to be completed were the rest of the hall and the facade. The new consecration was celebrated on 22 August 1896.
