San Vigilio was for a long time the pieve of Spormaggiore, until the new parish church of the Natività di Maria was built beside it. The first documentary mention dates from 1288 and the consecration from 1443, celebrated by Giovanni, the suffragan bishop of Trento; the main forms of the building date from the early 16th century, and by the end of that century the church had a high altar and four side altars, a sign of how much it mattered to the local people.
From 1708 the dedication changed: it was first the church of the Assunta and then of the Natività di Maria. In 1719 work began there on a chapel dedicated to the Madonna, to house a wooden statue of Mary believed to be miraculous. When construction of the new parish church began, between 1867 and 1868, the apse was demolished.
In the 20th century what remained was returned to worship, after major adaptation works, and the church was blessed in 1913. The statue of the Madonna was stolen in 1974, but recovered in 1976 and put back in its place; from the middle of the century until 2011 the building was the subject of numerous conservation restorations.
