The first place of worship dedicated to San Tommaso in Portolo may date from a period between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. From the sixteenth century it is known for certain that a building with that dedication existed, built or rebuilt, and that in 1518 it was consecrated with a solemn ceremony. Portolo, together with Nanno, belonged to the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the pieve of Tassullo.

In 1579 a pastoral visit found San Tommaso in very poor condition, and it was decided to redo the roof and strengthen the structure. It was not enough: at the beginning of the nineteenth century the building was completely rebuilt, and when the work was finished a second consecration was celebrated, performed by Francesco Saverio Luschin, Bishop of Trento. A new short cycle of restoration began in 1971.

Just a moment...

Gipthe bearded vulture of Valli del Noce

Hi, I am Gip. I am a bearded vulture: my species had vanished from the Alps in the 1930s, and the first one born in Trentino in at least a hundred and fifty years took flight from Val di Rabbi this past 16 July.

Ask me about places, the valleys or the people who work here. I answer with what is in our pages: if I do not know something, I will tell you.

Gip is an assistant based on artificial intelligence. It answers only with the verified facts in our pages. Your questions are processed by Anthropic, in the United States, and we do not keep them: do not write personal data. How we handle them.
