The first documentary mention of a church of San Matteo at Comasine dates from 1446, and a few years later, in 1462, the building was rebuilt. In 1550 it received both curate status, as a subsidiary of the pieve of Ossana, and the baptismal font. The solemn consecration was celebrated in 1617 by Pietro Belli, suffragan bishop, and two years later the main portal was made and placed on the façade.
In 1853 a serious fire caused extensive damage and destroyed the bell tower. Restoration work began a few years later and was completed in 1860, when the new bell tower was also erected. The church had parish status from 1919, and two further fires damaged it between 1921 and 1924.
In the midst of the world war, between 1942 and 1943, it was restored and enlarged: a storeroom was added, the masonry structures were reinforced, the plasterwork was reviewed, the electrical system was installed and new stained-glass windows were fitted. Around the middle of the twentieth century the roof of the bell tower was reworked, and in 1969 the floor was relaid.
