The oldest document that mentions this church dates from 1264, but a fragment of Carolingian-era fresco on the presbytery shows that the building already existed in the ninth century. In the fifteenth century the whole structure was redesigned by Adamo da Laino, from the Val d'Intelvi, the same master who rebuilt the parish church of Malé, and in 1488 it was completed with a cycle of frescoes by the brothers Giovanni and Battista Baschenis, itinerant painters. On 14 October 1497 the building and the altar were consecrated.
In 1600 the fifteenth-century frescoes were whitewashed, and with them the coat of arms of the Mazza family. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries work on the sacristy and the roof followed one another, between 1774 and 1797, the repainting in 1823, the construction of the choir gallery in 1828 and the replacement of the floor in 1879.
In 1958 a bay in front of the entrance wall was completed, to increase the capacity of the building and house a choir gallery; further restoration work was carried out between 1985 and 1990 and between 2008 and 2012.
