When it was built is not certain. A first indirect mention may date back to 1117, but it is from 1266 that the church appears in the documents, described as built beside a graveyard. What is certain, however, also from recent archaeological investigations, is what stood before on the same site: a pagan temple of the Roman era, between the 1st and the 6th century, and before that human settlements of the Iron Age.
Already the records of 1384 described the building as poorly maintained, and in the fifteenth century work was carried out: consolidation of the structure, updating of its appearance to Gothic and Renaissance taste, and then new frescoes both inside and in the splays of the external windows of the apse. In the last years of the sixteenth century the hall was raised in its entirety, with the consequent rebuilding of the roof and the façade.
In 1617, by order of the suffragan bishop Pietro Belli, the fifteenth-century frescoes were whitewashed. The main portal dates from 1627; around the middle of the eighteenth century conservation restorations were carried out and almost a century later balustrades were added to separate the hall from the presbytery.
