The first church of Carciato was built in the fifteenth century, but on a different site from the one later chosen for the new place of worship. The foundation stone of the new building was laid in the early years of the second half of the eighteenth century, and the works could be considered complete only by 1788: at that date the earlier building was decommissioned, sold and used for other purposes. As soon as the works were finished, the inside of the dome was decorated with frescoes.
Giovanni Nepomuceno de Tschiderer, Bishop of Trento, consecrated the new church in 1851. About thirty years later the presbytery was given a new floor, made of Tres stone, and subsequently a conservative restoration was needed to protect the structure from damp.
In 1936 damage was recorded from earthquake tremors, though not enough to compromise the structure or its use for religious services. The 1976 earthquake was another matter: it caused considerable problems and the church had to remain closed for a long time for restoration works, completed in 1988.
