At the beginning of the nineteenth century Spormaggiore already had a parish church, but it had proved insufficient. Work on the church of the Natività di Maria began between 1867 and 1868, according to the source consulted; the new building rose beside the old pieve and was consecrated with a solemn ceremony in 1875.
With the new century, five bells cast specially for this church were placed in the bell tower. The First World War took almost all of them: only the first and oldest was left, and the others were replaced in the years just after the war, together with a restoration of the building. After the Second World War came the organ, the decorations of the outer walls and the changes required by renewed liturgical needs.
From 1971 a cycle of restorations began, which came to an end after 2006: first the roof, then the damage from the earthquake that struck the area in 1976, then the structural review of the whole building, the repainting and the arrangement of the churchyard while the square was being repaved.
