The convent of the Franciscan friars minor of Mezzolombardo was founded in the second half of the seventeenth century, and by around 1666 both the convent and the church could be considered finished. The aedicule with the image of the Madonna that stood on that site before construction was moved into the presbytery: what was there before was not cleared away, but taken in. The bell tower dates from 1670, as does the solemn consecration, and the choir was completed two years later.

During the Napoleonic invasion the church and convent were suppressed, and only from 1815 did the situation return to what it had been. In 1834 the side chapel of the Addolorata and the oratory were added; three years later the convent was restored and small stoves for heating were placed in some of the cells. Then the sacristy was rebuilt and the library was set up above it.

After the middle of the nineteenth century the chapel of San Francesco was built, and the hall was raised to improve the air circulation; the vault was frescoed with the image of San Francesco d'Assisi. In the early years of the twentieth century the floor of the presbytery, which until then had been of wood, was redone, and the roof received tiles.

Today in the valleys

Just a moment...

Gipthe bearded vulture of Valli del Noce

Hi, I am Gip. I am a bearded vulture: my species had vanished from the Alps in the 1930s, and the first one born in Trentino in at least a hundred and fifty years took flight from Val di Rabbi this past 16 July.

Ask me about places, the valleys or the people who work here. I answer with what is in our pages: if I do not know something, I will tell you.

Gip is an assistant based on artificial intelligence. It answers only with the verified facts in our pages. Your questions are processed by Anthropic, in the United States, and we do not keep them: do not write personal data. How we handle them.
