The first documentary mention of the church of Cogolo dates from 1281, and about fifty years later, in 1322, that original church was rebuilt: this is recorded by the epigraph on the north side. Between 1370 and 1380 the bell tower was decorated with a large fresco depicting San Cristoforo, attributed to Giovanni da Volpino, better known as the Maestro di Sommacampagna.
From the mid-fifteenth century the church was enlarged and its walls, inside and out, were frescoed by a master of the school of Cristoforo I Baschenis; when the work was finished, in 1497, the suffragan bishop Francesco De la Chiesa celebrated its consecration. After the mid-sixteenth century the roof was rebuilt, replacing the wooden structures, and in 1558 there was a new consecration, celebrated by Mariano Manno. In 1643 it was the turn of the north exterior wall, decorated with a fresco by the Valtellina master Giovanni Angelo Valorsa.
At the end of that century the church was given the status of a curacy, subsidiary to Ossana. At the beginning of the nineteenth century a fire caused it extensive damage and a restoration to repair it followed; it was made a parish on 29 August 1919, and in 1933 the interior was decorated.
